About Crumb & Currency

The Untold Story of Teacakes

Southern tea cakes are a traditional dessert deeply rooted in African American history and Southern U.S. culture. These soft, cake-like cookies are made with simple ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and sometimes vanilla or nutmeg, reflecting their origins in times of limited resources.

Origins:

Tea cakes are believed to have roots in West African culinary traditions, shaped by the experiences of enslaved Africans during slavery. Drawing inspiration from European tea cakes and biscuits often served at afternoon teas and social gatherings, enslaved cooks adapted these recipes to fit the ingredients available to them on plantations. They replaced expensive items like fine sugars and spices with local or more affordable alternatives, creating a unique version of the tea cake that reflected their resilience and creativity.

Cultural Significance:

Connection to Heritage: Tea cakes became a symbol of resourcefulness and resilience, passed down through generations of African American families.

Communal Traditions: They were often prepared for family gatherings, church events, and celebrations, maintaining their place as a comforting and nostalgic treat.

Tea cakes across different countries:

Tea cakes are enjoyed worldwide, with their form, ingredients, and cultural significance varying widely by region. Each country's version reflects its unique cultural tastes and local ingredients, yet they all share a common tradition of being paired with tea or served during social gatherings.

Our Golden Story

It all began in 2012 when Chef Sean Perrodin set out to perfect a versatile and delicious Creole teacake baking mix in his kitchen. He affectionately called it his "Golden Ticket," envisioning this nostalgic treat reaching households everywhere. Three years later, a major grocery retailer purchased 36,000 teacakes, which sold out in just 120 days, while his small restaurant baked over 2,000 teacakes weekly. Customers savored every bite, reliving cherished childhood memories and experiencing pure joy through the flavor of these Creole teacakes.

Fueled by community love and entrepreneurial passion, Chef Perrodin’s creation became a local favorite, a testament to its timeless appeal. Now, 13 years later, after facing the highs and lows of business, we’re back—stronger and more inspired than ever—with a simply irresistible treat that bridges the line between cookie and cake. Our teacake pound cake is delighting taste buds once again, this time wrapped in elegant gold bar packaging, complete with a golden surprise in every box.

With this "Golden Ticket" idea now turning into reality, we aim to create a global presence by sharing the rich cultural traditions of the beloved teacake. More than just a dessert, we’re offering moments of connection, comfort, and joy—good crumbs, great company, and priceless memories. The true currency of comfort lies in every perfect teacake pound cake crumb, spreading a little more love with every bite.
